It was requested by my friend Octavio Kulesz for a presentation he’s doing at the Metropolitan Centre of Design in Buenos Aires, about “The academic book in the digital age”. Mobile fiction

Novel Idea got a punt in the Mail & Guardian today, in an article I wrote about about publishing on cellphones. Here’s an extract:

As much as the thought of The Gr8 GatsB or W8ing 4 GodO might fill you with horror, there is a space for fiction on cellphones too. In Japan, keitai shosetsu (mobile phone novels) are a growing phenomenon. Young women write these stories – a cheesily dramatic mixture of violence and romance told mainly in dialogue – for free, in the hope of becoming famous writers. And it works. In 2007, half of the best-selling printed novels in Japan had started as cellphone novels. Koizora (Sky of Love) sold 1.2 million copies in paperback and has since been made into a movie.

Could the cellphone novel be The Next Big Thing in publishing? Watch this space…
